Ah yes, clothes that are submission and humiliation in and of themselves.

Gina Velour, San Francisco 1996Marne Lucas (Gina Velour) and I had just met a few weeks prior in Chicago and had done one of the most important photoshoots of my career up to that point. Coincidentally we were both heading to San Francisco a few weeks later and decided to shoot some more material. We were in my friend Molly’s minimal backyard and I was struggling to find an interesting way to shoot Marne, and the only prop we had laying around was a single rake. We weren’t really coming up with anything, and then she took a time-out to adjust her hair. With no place to lay the rake, she simply stuck it in her mouth. I remember suddenly looking up and noticed the instance that you see in the photo. I told her to FREEZE! and got the shot.Interesting wardrobe story: I’m not sure how that ensemble she’s wearing was put together, but I remember we didn’t have too much to work with at the time. The t-shirt she’s wearing was a vintage softball shirt that I owned which said “ANIMALS” above a skull and crossbones. It wasn’t until a few years later that I noticed the curious way the shirt was cinched and how it manipulated the letters on the shirt. Check it out!
